Editing Services

Whether you’re hoping to go indie or looking to query agents, your manuscript can always benefit from a second set of eyes. I’ve worked with published authors to writers starting their first drafts. Editing can seem like a daunting process, but I’m here to help. I want you to succeed.

We can’t always see everything our readers will. Our minds know what we’re intending to put on the page and often fill in blank spaces or glaze over details readers might find confusing. That’s why editing, critiquing, and author networking are crucial before publication. The more feedback you get, the better your book will be.

Below, you will find a list of editing services I currently offer. If you are interested in any of these items, please contact me so we can discuss specifics and arrange a time to begin. Slots close and open as work is completed and reservations are moved around. Check back or contact me if you need a slot that isn’t open. I might be able to squeeze you in.

I currently work with Word (.doc/.docx) and Google Docs. Just be sure to permit me “suggesting” or “editing” mode if using Google. I’m not currently in a position to take paper manuscripts.

Before we begin, I’d like to offer all first-time clients a free five-page edit of your work (whichever stage you’re looking for). That way, you can decide if you like my editing style and I can ensure I’m the right fit for your work. We also want to check on whether the editing stage is appropriate so our efforts can be efficient. I always start off new client editing sessions with a few questions about you and your work. I want to understand what your goals are and help you achieve them.

I currently offer the following (details below):
Book Maps
Critiques
Developmental Edits
Line Edits
Copy Edits

Book Maps

Any Genre

Book maps are great for checking the overall tension, character growth, and plot arcs of a story. This is a good option if you’re unsure about the effectiveness of your suspense, action, and emotion.

Includes:

  1. A single read-through of your work.
  2. A chart displaying plot lines and character arcs within the work, by chapter
  3. A tension graph by plotline and chapter
  4. A letter summarizing developmental concerns and considerations

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Now 1/2 Price: $2 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $4 per 1,000 words

Critiques

Any Genre

This choice is best when you’re working with an initial draft of your manuscript. You’ll receive critical feedback on developmental concerns without paying the developmental price.

Includes:

  1. A light developmental edit from a single read-through of your work
  2. Comments in-text covering topics from character arcs and plot holes to consistency and copyediting concerns
  3. A final critique sheet — with answered questions which you can view here: Sample Critique Sheet — will be returned with the version of your document that includes my in-text notes. This is a document I created to provide the most feedback on a manuscript in the smallest amount of space.
  4. Author Confidence Booster Sheet summarizing your strengths

It can still be overwhelming. I always encourage writers to read through the completed sheet first because it contains more general concerns (developmental), and then look through the details of the in-text notes. It doesn’t make sense to use your precious time to edit details of a section only to decide to cut it later.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Now 1/2 Price: $3 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $6 per 1,000 words

Developmental Edits

Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Military, Women’s Fiction, Children’s (any sub-genre therein)
These edits are more intense so I must limit acceptable genres to the ones I know best–for quality of feedback.

Making a story comprehensible, inspiring, entertaining, and without plot holes is critical for reader enjoyment.

This is the heavy edit of:

  1. Inciting Incidents
  2. Character design and arcs
  3. Worldbuilding
  4. Backstory/History
  5. Plotlines
  6. Conflict and tension
  7. Timeline
  8. POV and perspectives
  9. Chapter breaks and transitions

Includes:

  1. Three reads of your manuscript:
    1. First for comprehension of characters, plot, etc.
    2. Second to assess developmental concerns
    3. Third to confirm/clean my suggested improvements
  2. Comments in-text covering topics from character arcs and plot holes to consistency and copyediting concerns
  3. In-line edits with Track Changes turned on
  4. A filled out critique sheet
  5. A letter summarizing concerns

Authors, please include: Any technical terms, character, world-building, or book series info sheets you have.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 2-4 weeks.**

Now 1/2 Price: $6 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $12 per 1,000 words

Packing a punch with every line and continually advancing the story are important components of keeping your readers hooked. This type of editing will address the arrangement of the lines for the flow of the story and may include a handful of developmental or copy editing concerns.

  7. Transitions for flow
  8. Dialogue and tags

Includes:

2021 Full Price: $14 per 1,000 words

Copyediting

Any Genre

Not the best with commas or understanding subject-verb agreements? How about dangling modifiers? This level of editing will fix those things. Readers are more likely to notice misspelled words, too many commas, and run-on sentences than a minor subplot hole. This stage of editing is crucial for getting your book to that professional-quality level.

I will correct:

  1. Spelling
  2. Punctuation
  3. Grammar
  4. Repetition & Redundancies if Line Edits have missed any.
  5. Vague or Abstract Wording
  6. Homonyms

Includes:

  1. Three reads of your manuscript:
    1. First for comprehension of characters, plot, etc.
    2. Second to work through every line of your manuscript
    3. Third to confirm/clean suggested improvements
  2. Comments in the Review Pane of provided manuscript
  3. Track Changes with in-text suggestions for improvement. You will have the power to accept or reject these changes.
  4. A final letter summarizing what has been fixed and any major concerns

Authors, please include: Any technical terms, character, world-building, or book series info sheets.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 2-4 weeks.**

Now 1/2 Price: $6 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $12 per 1,000 words

Includes:

  1. Check for errors in grammar and mechanics
  2. Check the consistency of terms, names, descriptions, plot, characters, etc.
  3. Check for repetitions and redundancies
  4. Check formatting, book design

2021 Full Price: $6 per 1,000 words

Reflection

If you have had me perform any of the above edits and wish to have me look over your changes at a later date (because we all take different amounts of time to work through alterations) please request a “Reflection.” I will give your work a single read-through with a short letter covering anything I find that may still need tweaking.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Now 1/2 Price: $50
2021 Full Price: $100

Consultation

If you don’t know which stage you’re at in your writing or where to start with the editing process, just send me a message. I will never charge for this. I know authorship can be frustrating. I love helping others. I love stories of all genres. And I want everyone to be proud of their work. I don’t think a conversation should be paid for.

A Note:

My first book was a mess when I started this journey way back in 2012, as was I. I had a lot of wonderful help from Jeni Chappelle. Her patience and skill made me want to get involved in editing too.

I have since taken classes from the Writers’ League of Texas, Editorial Freelancers Association, and Writers’ Digest University. I’ve also published four novels and a children’s book through multiple channels. I am always writing, reading, taking classes, and watching webinars to develop my skills into the best they can be in order to assist you on your road to authorship. There’s just nothing better than holding your finished book, cover and all, in hand for the first time. I want you to know that joy, pride, and relief too.

If you’re looking for a different freelance editor to hire, check out her page (Jeni Chappelle Editorial). She is involved in tons of writer activities and contests. I absolutely recommend her.

I wish you the best. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
